From the very first glace you can tell this is directed towards fans of horror films. Not only is the cover image scary and dark, but the font of the magazine name is in a font similar to the iconic one used for the title of the film Scream. The colours used as reds, blacks and whites, meaning that it has connotations of good vs evil as well as blood, danger and death. Just what you would expect from a horror film, so therefore fitting to be used on a horror magazine. The use of a very scary cover image like I said earlier is to catch the attention immediatly. It is a very dark image, with the colouring being blacks and bluey-greeny colours, neither of which are warm and friendly colours. The images at the bottom are all screengrabs from other horror films showing that this magazine is not only centered around one film but others as well, and from a range of sub-genres. There's gory images as well as supernatural alongside the iconic photo from Scream.
This is a sort-of-horror-magazine done differently. As you can tell from the start, it is not a magazine primarily about horror films, but this issue in particular has a rather memorable horror character on the front. The styling of Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd with the very pale skin and dark eyes/clothes/hair, means that regular readers of this magazine could tell that this issue was particularly featured around this horror film. The cover doesn't have a massive range of horror connotations, but it looks professional, clean and still gets the feeling of a horror issue without over doing it with dripping blood and excessive fonts. The fonts used are all similar and nothing drastically alters with the colours, meaning that the title stands out as it should, but the words 'Starring Johnny Depp' do also. I really like the style of this magazine cover for those reasons and will definitely use it as inspiration when I come to creating my own.
This is another example of being able to tell the genre of this magazine from the second you see the cover. The scary image and dripping blood red font has obvious links to horror and horror films. The colours and gory photos are of course massive factors, but the largest tagline reads 'Evil Dead' which is an iconic horror film, so once again, the reader would know exactly what this issue of 'Scream' is about, and whether they would be interested in buying it. Not only does this magazine show off what films are featured, but also what interviews with cast members are in this issue, with small photos of three actors down the left side. This plays a part in trying to entice the largest audience possible to read this magazine. The layout risks being over-crowded, but because of the nature of this magazine and their use of contrasting colours/fonts, it works and although it looks busy, it only makes you want to read it more because there is so much feature in the magazine itself that something must appeal to you.
